Northampton County Council wants a heads up before County Exec proposes new hires

In a bid to stop rush-job approvals of appointments to county jobs, Northampton County Council Thursday night directed county executive John Brown to give council a seven-day heads-up on all his job candidates.

Council unanimously approved the ordinance requiring Brown to provide all information about the job candidate, including letters of recommendation, resumes and job history, a week before the appointment comes up for a vote.

Stephen Barron, the county controller, praised the move, saying it would eliminate what he called "the five o'clock special," which he described as a way for government officials to "slide under the radar" and avoid press attention on actions they'd rather not discuss at length.

"This is going a long way to stop five o'clock specials," Barron said.
