A church in Lehigh County is looking to spice things up at an Allentown elementary school.
The Asbury United Methodist Church in South Whitehall Township is raising money to revamp the playground at Luis A. Ramos Elementary School.
Nearly 900 students attend the school on West Allen Street.
During recess, more than 100 students rush to the play yard, where they share a single jungle gym unit.
"It's so crowded with all the other people," said Emily Martinez, a third grader.
"They do need to improve the playground here. It's pathetic," said Claria Santiago, a grandparent. "They fight for going down the slide, they push a lot."
"We went to the teachers and PTA we asked what we could do for them. They said their playground really needed improvement," said Dick McCreight, a volunteer at Ramos Elementary School.
McCreight said the church will pay to add a second playground unit, and lay down blacktop so students have more room to bounce a ball and play when the ground is wet.
The church is also offering to pay for the landscaping and upkeep costs. The total project is expected to cost around $50,000.
The congregation has already raised some of the money. Thirty percent of the money collected during its Christmas Eve offering has been set aside for the project.
It's also donating all of money raised at its annual chili cook-off.
The 7th annual event is being held this Saturday.
More than 60 chefs will bring their best batch of chili to the church located at 1533 Springhouse Road in South Whitehall Township.
A panel of celebrity judges will also be at the event. Judges include WFMZ's own Jaccii Farris and retired NBA player Darryl Dawkins.
The event runs from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Donations will be collected at the door.
