The United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley partnered with employees at two local businesses to raise $13,000 to help students and staff from the fire damaged Cleveland Elementary School.
PPL Corp. employees donated $5,000 through a digital giving campaign created by the United Way which provided a 100 percent match. PPL employees have a long established relationship with the school, volunteering and serving as tutors and mentors there for the past 25 years, according to the release from the United Way.
The money will go toward the Cleveland Fire Fund which was established to help students and staff at the Allentown school that was damaged in February when a fire broke out on its second floor.
Separately, employees at the True Value Distribution Center in Allentown held two fundraisers, raising $3,000. The employees, a majority of whom are members of the United Steelworkers Local 554, decided to donate the money to the fund.
Students and staff were displaced by the fire and repairs are anticipated to take up to 8 weeks to complete.
