Lehigh County commissioners and the county solicitor met in a closed-door executive session Wednesday night to discuss what — if anything —to do about the Christian cross in the middle of the county’s official seal.
The Freedom from Religion Foundation, a Wisconsin-based group, has requested the seal be changed.
Its lawyers have advised the county that having a cross on the 71-year-old seal is unconstitutional.
For most of the commissioners’ public meeting that preceded Wednesday’s executive session, it appeared they were just ignoring the issue.
At the beginning of that public meeting, William Roy, a Lower Milford Township supervisor, stood to tell commissioners the “attack” on the county seal “has me furious.”
“I’m not one to run from a fight,” said Roy. “I’m asking you to take this challenge and preserve our county seal.
“This is our heritage, this is our history. We shouldn’t run from this.”
None of the nine commissioners responded to Roy’s comments.
At the very end of the public meeting, Brad Osborne, chairman of nine commissioners, proposed a motion that they “adjourn the public portion of this meeting and reconvene in executive session for the purpose of discussing threatened litigation from the Freedom From Religion Foundation.”
That motion immediately was made and unanimously approved by all the commissioners.
Osborne said no public action would be taken by the commissioners Wednesday night at the conclusion of that executive session, which was held beneath the county seal in their main meeting room.
Said Osborne after the executive session: "The board continues to explore its options and expects to reach a decision shortly."
Lehigh County Executive Thomas Muller had no comment when asked about the cross on the county seal.
