There's a major event coming to Reading that's expected to boost business and tourism.
Reading mogul Al Boscov, along with city leaders, announced Sunday that the GoggleWorks and Doubletree Hotel are hosting an international art conference beginning next year.
The annual five-day IX conference is an international celebration of imaginative realist art.
According to organizers, imaginative realism combines classical painting technique with postmodernnarrative subjects, focusing on the unreal, the unseen, and the impossible, "offering visions of humanity's mythic past, its unexplored future and, in some cases, its terrifying present."
Officials say the event will help revitalize Reading's downtown.
It'll also help promote the city as a destination for the arts and culture.
As part of the conference, more than 150 artists come to IX from around the world for five days to exhibit their work, find inspiration and buyers in equal measure.
International art students and art collectors also attend the event each year.
Founded in 2008, the IX show began in Altoona, Blair County, and has been held at the Allentown Art Museum of the Lehigh Valley, where the event will also be held this fall.
Organizers say they were drawn to Reading because of the city's commitment to the arts, the "wonderful environment of the GoggleWorks, the atmosphere of the community and the logistical friendliness of the entertainment square and new Doubletree Hotel."
The GoogleWorks is located at 201 Washington Street, and Doubletree at 645 Penn St.
Beginning October of 2016, the conference will be held around the same time each year through 2020.
