The icy roads caused quite a headache for parents Monday. About 10 school districts across Berks County were closed and others had early dismissals, all to avoid the slick conditions on the roads.
"We try to do the best we can, along with our transportation directors, to make the best possible decision, but it is never an easy one," said Rudy Ruth, the superintendent of Wilson School District, addressing the challenge of calling off school because of weather.
Although several districts closed for the day, Wilson students were among those who still came in and were planning on having a full day, but that all changed when the forecast did and more ice was predicted for earlier in the afternoon.
Ruth said he weighed the education of the students, parents' schedules and safety concerns and made the tough decision to have an early dismissal.
"Naturally, we always air on the side of safety, and when it comes down to, if we are just not fully confident it is a safe situation, that is when we will do a late start, an early dismissal or a total closure," said Ruth.
Some parents in the area thought the early dismissal was a smart idea.
"Oh definitely, for security and safety issues for the children and all the districts in this community. I would definitely suggest with the freezing rain and treacherous roads that they are expecting later on today that it was a smart decision," said Doug Pietsch.
Students were not complaining either.
"It is alright, I guess. I get to miss gym," said Brittney Lamy.
Since Wilson just had an early dismissal, it still counts as a full day of school. The other 10 other districts in the county that closed will have to make up the day.
