Hearts were heavy on the campus of Millersville University Monday night as hundreds turned out to say farewell to an 18-year-old freshman killed over the weekend.
Students and faculty stood in the bitter cold and freezing rain to celebrate the life of Karlie Hall.
Hall's dead body was found in her dorm Sunday morning, police said.
An autopsy revealed she was beaten and strangled, investigators said.
The prime suspect is Hall's 19-year-old boyfriend, Gregorio Orrostieta from Kennett Square, Chester County.
"We know this is not a whodunit," said Lancaster county district attorney Craig Stedman during a news conference Monday.
Investigators say surveillance cameras show that Karlie and Orrostieta were the only ones in Hall's dorm room during the time period in question.
"He is now charged with taking her life through strangulation and additional multiple traumatic injuries," said Stedman.
At Monday evening's vigil, loved ones tried to push the gruesome details aside as they lit up the night sky with candles all to celebrate Karlie's life.
Students say fundraising efforts are underway to help the family with funeral costs and to help combat domestic violence and domestic abuse.
"I think that this is something that has touched the Millersville community. Not only have we lost one of our marauders, but we've lost her in such a terrible way," said Aisling Burns, a Millersville student.
During the vigil, the university's mascot was covered, a sign that life will never be the same for the students or the university.
