Fire damaged high school classrooms at a Christian school in central Berks County, and now school officials are trying to find a way forward.
Classes were canceled Monday and students were told not to report Tuesday following the fire at The King's Academy in Centre Township.
Part of the roof was obliterated, and the fire destroyed almost everything in its path at the private academy.
"I had visions in my head that I would come, be able to collect a few things, but as you can see there's nothing to collect," said Elizabeth Griesemer, an English teacher at the school.
A pile of debris sits atop Griesemer's desk. Her classroom is nothing but a burned-out shell. A computer, telephone, desks and books were just some of the things found ruined in the rubble.
"The books, I mean lots and lots of books, those are hard to lose," said Griesemer.
The fire started around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, and crews were forced to call in additional manpower.
"I'm very thankful that this happened at that time and not while kids were here in class," said Michelle Goodman, head of school.
Floors in the affected classrooms suffered significant structural damage. Smoke spread throughout the entire high school, and adjoining rooms suffered water damage. The computer lab, library and lockers were also affected by the smoke, said officials.
On Monday, administrators were working to notify parents about what lies ahead.
"We're already in conversations, looking at other facilities. We want to make this transition as quick as possible for our students," said Goodman.
Adjustors speculate damage is well over $100,000. An exact cause of the fire is still unknown.
"It's a loss for our community, but we look to the future to see what's next," said Goodman.
No injuries were reported.
