Former teacher sentenced for sexually assaulting student

A former teacher in Monroe County will spend time behind bars for sexually assaulting a student.

Christopher Martinelli was sentenced Thursday to spend between 11 1/2 and 23 months in county prison.

In November he pleaded no contest to charges of having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old boy in 2011.

In March 2013, Pocono Mountain Regional Police arrested Martinelli at his home in Tobyhanna Township.

At the time of his arrest, Martinelli was a 10th grade social studies teacher at Pocono Mountain West High School in Pocono Summit.

The district fired him shortly after his arrest and the state Board of Education suspended his teaching certificate.

As part of his sentencing, Martinelli also has to register as a sex offender for 25 years.
