Police are once again putting people in the Reading area on notice about a troubling telephone scam.
The scam involves someone receiving a call that a relative (sometimes identified by name) was involved in a car accident and is being held hostage until the victim pays a ransom for the relative's release, police said.
Reading police said Thursday that they have received several recent complaints about the scam.
"Should anyone receive such a call, we would ask that they make every effort to verify the safety of their relative, and we would also ask that they send no money," said Sgt. Matthew Schappell.
The scam, not unlike others, almost always asks that the victim buy and provide identifying numbers for gift cards, or that money be forwarded in some other untraceable manner.
