The owner of a local martial arts academy has developed a one-of-a-kind program to help kids struggling with illness.

David Nemeroff, owner of Aikido Masters Self-Defense Academy in Whitehall Township, has designed a program called Kempo For Kids With Cancer.

Nemeroff says he's been working with kids for 30 years, and he's seen the benefits that martial arts can have.

Nemeroff said, "It's not so much about learning how to fight but you learn how to master yourself and that's what's really important. Once you can control yourself and your attitude and the way you approach life, everything else becomes easier and more effective."

He says the goal of the program is to provide kids with a sense of empowerment, strength and wellness.

He's been working with The Cancer Support Community and Camelot for Children to help implement the program.
