A bullet wound was the primary cause of death of Richard Scheuermann, the 39-year-old Wilson man who was shot by police following an early morning chase on Oct. 24, according to Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli.

But Morganelli stressed he has not made a decision on whether or not the shooting was justified or if charges will be filed against any police officers who were involved.

Morganelli said the county coroner should be releasing the official statement on the cause of Scheuermann's death later Wednesday or Thursday.

The district atttorney said Scheuermann also had self-inflicted knife wounds to the neck. which were "contributing causes to his death. "

Pennsylvania state police are investigating the shooting.

Morganelli met Tuesday with Atty. Josh Karoly, the lawyer of Scheurmann's family and is asking for any and all information Karoly uncovered during his own investigation to be brought forth, including additional witnesses.

He plans to meet again early next week with the family's lawyer.

The district attorney wants to know all the information before making any decision about possible charges.

His said his decision may be to refer the case to a grand jury or even to the state attorney general's office.

The deceased man was involved in a police chase back in October after driving on the wrong side of the road in Palmer Township and failing to stop for police.

Palmer Township police were joined by Easton police in the pursuit.

The chase ended in Easton, where police say Scheuermann crashed his truck into a utility pole and rammed a police cruiser twice before unidentified officers opened fire.
