Construction of National Museum of Industrial History in Bethlehem appears to be back on track

It's been a long time coming, but it looks like construction on the National Museum of Industrial History in Bethlehem is getting back on track.

The plans suffered a major setback last year in the wake of a grand jury report criticized the museum's then-CEO for failing to build a museum on the historic Bethlehem Steel site.

Roughly $17 million in donations were solicited from public and private sources, but the grand jury said the bulk was spent on salaries and operational expenses.

After a year-long forensic investigation, the grand jury recommended the board fire its CEO and consider civil action against him and asked the attorney general's office to look into the matter.

Shortly after the probe began, so did construction on the museum.

Bethlehem Mayor Robert Donchez said he has no problem with construction continuing, but he said the city won't release funds for the project without condition.

"I will not sign off on any ARCAP money or TIFF money for the project until the attorney general's office issues their findings, out of respect for the process and out of respect for that office," Donchez said.

The museum has a new CEO, but Donchez said the attorney general may recommend the board be replaced or that it partners with a community college or other nonprofit organization.

"We want clarity to see what the future of the board is, what the future of the museum is, and they certainly want clarity to know if they can move forward or what their options are, so we are kind of in a limbo position," said Donchez.

An spokesman for Attorney General Kathleen Kane said it's unknown when the report will be released.

The museum's current CEO was unavailable for comment.
