President Obama has signed a bill sponsored by outgoing Republican Congressman Jim Gerlach.


The bill authorizes military and economic aid for Ukraine and calls for stricter sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin.


It came about after Russia annexed Crimea. The move is considered illegal by Ukraine and many western countries.


The president said he doesn't intend to impose the sanctions the law calls for at this time but said they could be imposed if circumstances change.
