Sunday night dozens gathered in the city of Bethlehem to at a prayer vigil to remember three African American males shot by police: Michael Brown, Eric Garner and Tamir Rice.

"There need to be voices to what is happening…voices of outrage," Bethlehem resident Jane Arrington-Bender said.

The event marked a peaceful gathering of song and prayer headed by the NAACP, for a community healing from recent events.

"I think the main thing is to try to get the minority community, the African American community, and the police department have a dialogue," Bonita Crowe of the NAACP said.

Dozens in the community came together to sing and pray for a sense of understanding across cultures in the United States.

"The responsibility is to teach our children to have respect for themselves, for elders, for authority," Pastor Paul Brian Watson of New Christian Harvest Church in Whitehall said. "If we do a better job in our homes, and we police our own children, we won't have to worry about them when they're out in the street."

Police brutality and racial profiling were topics discussed, followed by prayers to find peaceful solutions.

"That's why I'm here because I knew there would be positive things taking place here, people encouraging people to be positive," Coopersburg resident Philip Reiss said.

The vigil was also intended to raise awareness of an understanding participants feel needs to begin between residents and law enforcement.
