The big guy in the red suit is preparing to make his rounds, and Tuesday, Santa Claus checked on some children in Easton.

“It’s kind of like a chain operation here, and we just have fun putting them together,” said Bill Walters, co-organizer with the Kiwanis Club of Easton.

All of the group is part of the Kiwanis. For the last 30 years, the club has hosted a party for the Intermediate Unit 20 and special needs students from across three counties.

“They love coming here, and it’s important because it’s a way for us all to get together within the IU, and we’re all here for the children,” said teacher Kim Sciortino.

The day started with a magician, but the real magic came when Santa entered the room.

“It was great watching the kids’ faces light up,” said Walters.

Faces that lit up brighter than any Christmas display imaginable, smile after smile, hug after hug.

Santa didn't stop until every boy and girl got to tell him what he or she wanted.

“The look on these kids’ faces," said Walters. "The surprised look on their faces, the fun to see these kids, that’s the real beginning of Christmas for me.”

Oh yeah, about those gift bags. Every student went home with one. It's a school lesson taught outside the classroom.

“It shows my kids, and even everybody here, that no matter what your abilities, you need to celebrate and you need to be celebrated,” said volunteer Barbara Smith.

And a mission to keep others fulfilled for another year.

“I’ve been a Kiwanian for half of my life," added Walters. "I’m a second generation Kiwanian. My father joined the Easton Kiwanis in the late 1940s. My wife is a Kiwanian. Kiwanis is a way of life for me.”
