We could be on the brink of sweeping immigration reform. Now, the question is whether President Obama will bypass Congress to make it happen.
A source close to the White House reportedly said the president will sign an executive order as early as next week with a 10-point immigration plan.
According to that source, the plan calls for what is known as deferred action. Children who immigrated illegally to the United States would be able to stay.
Also, 4.5. million illegal adult immigrants with U.S.-born children would be able to remain in the country.
"We want millions upon millions of children to know this Thanksgiving won't be interrupted by an immigration officer looking to split up their families," said U.S. Rep. Luis Gutiérrez, an Illinois Democrat.
Border security would also be beefed up and pay for immigration officers would also increase.
"Ultimately, we should be dealing with this through the legislative process. That's a more appropriate way to deal with it rather than through executive action," said U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent, a Republican who represents a portion of Berks County and the Lehigh Valley.
Republicans have already expressed their staunch opposition to the president's reported plan. New Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the executive order would be a "poison pill" that would damage relations with the new Republican Congress coming into power in January.
President Obama's press secretary would only confirm Thursday that the president is nearing a final decision on whether to issue that executive order on immigration.
