The WEEU Morning Show went on the air Monday without a voice that had long been familiar to the station's legion of listeners.
That voice was silenced early Saturday morning with the sudden passing of Mitch Gerhart, WEEU's sports director for the past three decades.
Gerhart, 54, died of an apparent heart attack just hours after broadcasting the Wilson-Manheim football game Friday night.
"The WEEU family lost a cherished and dear friend," the station said in a post on its website. "There isn't a person at this station who won't carry treasured memories of Mitch Gerhart with them for the rest of their lives."
In addition to his play-by-play broadcasts of scholastic basketball and football games, Gerhart wore many other hats at WEEU. He was long a part of the morning broadcast team and worked as a producer of the station's "Feedback" program.
Gerhart's colleagues, including Charlie Adams, Len Carmen, Mike Faust, Jack Holcomb, Mike Keller and Paul Roberts, shared their memories, as well as highlights of his many broadcasts, on WEEU throughout the morning Monday. They were joined by scores of listeners, who have also been expressing their thoughts on Facebook.
"Will miss listening to his voice on Friday nights," said Nathaniel Lichtley.
"Mitch's voice has been part of my life as long as I can remember," remarked Elizabeth Stoud. "My heart goes out to his family and the WEEU family."
"He was the best part of my morning drive. I'd always giggle when he was on," recalled Kimberly Schearer. "Thank you, Mitch, for adding the happiness to our lives."
Family and friends will gather between 6 and 8 p.m. Thursday at Albright College's Merner-Pfeiffer-Klein Memorial Chapel, North 13th and Union streets, in Reading. A celebration of life service will follow at 8 p.m.
