Northwestern Lehigh School District is considering removing the high school from the National School Lunch Program.

At Wednesday evening's Northwestern Lehigh School District School Board meeting, district Supervisor of Food Services Lori Seier told board members the government Smart Snacks in School regulation and Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, along with changes in student eating habits have prompted a discussion regarding the school's participation.

"We've been experiencing a decline in student meals," she said.

A proposal was presented at the board meeting two week's ago.

If the district moves to remove the high school from the national program, whole grains would be returned, portion sizes would be increased, fruits and vegetables would no longer be required, al la carte items would be offered and Chick-fil-A day would be reinstated.

Board members recently sampled the lunch food currently available at the high school.

"The food was obviously not home cooked," board member Joseph Reiter said. "It's pretty tough when you have to abide by the administration's [President Barack Obama] USDA [United States Department of Agriculture] program. We want to make it [lunch] better."

Board Vice President Paul Fisher Jr. concurred with Reiter's assessment of the food.

"It was certainly eye opening," he said. "I think we have a lot of work to do."

A survey will be available for parents and students to complete.

Board President Darryl Schafer encouraged participation in the survey.

"Student input is very important for the meal," he said. "Parent input is very important because they have to pay for the meal."

If the high school opts to pull out of the national program, the financial impact would be $60,000 to the district, Seier said.

She also said the district may re-enroll in the national program in the future.

The board will review and discuss the results of the survey at the 6 p.m. Jan. 5 operations meeting.

Possible action taken will occur at the Jan. 21 board meeting.

Any changes in the future will only apply to the high school.

If the board votes to remove the high school from the national program, changes would be effective beginning in the fall 2015.

Also during the meeting, the board recognized the high school girls' cross country and soccer teams and the varsity football team for championship seasons.

"It has been another outstanding season for fall teams," district Director of Athletics and Student Activities Jason Zimmerman said.

High school art students were also recognized by the board for their artwork, which is on display in the board room.

"We love having the art in our room," Schafer said. "This board really does believe in the arts."

"I'm very proud of all our students," district Superintendent Dr. Mary Anne Wright added.
