Bangor school board members batted around ideas Monday night on whether to spend $40,000 now to fix the baseball infield, even though winter is fast approaching, or to include it in a larger, more comprehensive plan encompassing a laundry list of overdue repairs.

The proposed $40,000 project is “about half the money that the field really needs,” said board member Kevin Pruett.

“I want it to be a part of a bigger, more comprehensive plan,” Pruett said.

“Let’s have all the pieces on the table.”

The work on the infield, a four or five day project, would include rebuilding the pitcher’s mound and lay sod, but it would not fix the drainage problems in the outfield.

No decision was made.

School district officials announced all five schools – Five Points Elementary, Washington Elementary, DeFranco Elementary, Bangor Middle School and Bangor High School – reached proficiency ratings or higher, according to test results released last week.

“We’re moving in the right direction,” said Frank DeFelice, the superintendent.

As the meeting approached its third hour, board member Michael Goffredo lashed out at Toni Lynch, a board member who is an outspoken opponent of Common Core teaching standards and many other state-mandated requirements in education.

“I’m tired of sitting here listening to nonsense,” Goffredo told Lynch. “Enough, please,” he said.

Goffredo quickly apologized for using the word nonsense but stood by his criticisms of having to listen to Lynch’s “philosophy” of how government should operate, which Goffredo said “doesn’t get us anywhere.”

“I don’t want to hear it,” Goffredo said. “I really don’t.”
