Ski season kicks off early, thanks to recent cold-spell

Thanks to the recent cold-spell, as well as $8 million dollars in renovations, this year marked the earliest opening in the history of the Blue Mountain ski area. This year crews spread three feet of snow on 60 acres in just three weeks. Six new snow-making pumps increasing output to 14,000 gallons per minute, were a big part of what made that project possible.

"It has just been a great investment; it is basically a model that all of the resorts over in Europe use," Blue Mountain ski area President, Barbara Green said. "I saw it about eight years ago and I said, 'We've got to have this.'"

In addition to the new guns, a large portion of the $8 million dollar investment was used to construct a new restaurant, create a more robust lesson program and make various updates throughout the mountain.

"It is my favorite resort in this area," Collegeville resident Ryan Hutchison said. "It has the best trails and the best parks."

Blue Mountain will be closed Monday, Nov. 24 through Thursday, Nov. 27 with plans to reopen for the remainder of the season on Friday, Nov. 28.
