Reward increased as arson investigation continues in Reading

Investigators have increased the reward to $85,000 to find the person who set fire to a former outlet building in Reading.

"Disappointed," said Alan Shuman, the president of Shuman Development Group, who spoke out Wednesday as he looked around the former Reading Outlet Center building he was renovating at North Eight and Oley streets.

The building was set ablaze on Oct. 18. The fire destroyed the second and sixth floors and the roof.

Shuman told 69 News it was the first big warehouse building to be under construction in Reading over the last 50 years, set to be revamped into space for apartments and businesses.

"I could not really see anybody being against a project like this," said Shuman.

Investigators concluded the fire was intentionally set and caused about $12 million in damage.

"When we learned of the heinous fire that devastated this building, we reached out to Alan to see what we could do to be supportive," said Allan Galbraith, chairman of the board, Associated Builders and Contractors Inc., Keystone Chapter, which has contributed $65,000 to the reward.

That money is in addition to $10,000 from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and $10,000 from the developer. All together, the reward now stands at $85,000 for the arrest and conviction of the arsonist.

"People need to understand that when you commit a crime, there is a price to pay, and we are hopeful that this money will help encourage anyone that knows anything about this case to come forward," said Commissioner Christian Leinbach, R-Berks County.

If you have any information about the fire, you can contact the ATF at 888-ATF-FIRE (283-3473).
