Reading parting ways with 'ugly' Christmas tree

Some are calling the Christmas tree in downtown Reading a "Charlie Brown" tree, and many are upset with the way it looks.

"They really want to have something nice in downtown Reading," President Francis Acosta of the Reading City Council said. "That is what we are trying to provide."

After complaints from angry Reading residents, Acosta says the city's Christmas tree will come down.

"My family will be paying for the tree," Acosta said. "The community, business owners and others will be paying for the decorations."

The 50-foot Norwood Spruce, located at 5th and Penn, has been called by many "pathetic" and "ugly."

"I think it does look a little pitiful," Reading Resident, Teresa Rodriguez said. "I think they picked the wrong tree."

"It was a waste of time for them to even come out here and put this tree up," Martin McNeil, who works near the tree, said. "Honestly, they might as well put nothing out here."

In response, the city contacted Cobblestone Farms in Mohnton for a replacement.

"A couple of days ago they gave me a call asking to see if I had 20 foot trees," Ower of Cobblestone Farms, Debbie Althouse said. "I had two that kind of would have been suitable."

The new tree is expected to be in place Monday or Tuesday of next week. The city plans to decorate it on Friday, and light the new tree on Saturday.

"I believe that having a beautiful tree will help all of us to have a better city," Acosta said.

As for the old tree, Acosta says it has been adopted by a local business.
