Penn State tops Lehigh in wrestling showdown

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – No. 15 Lehigh hung with rival and fifth-ranked Penn State through five bouts, but the host and four-time defending national champion Nittany Lions won four of the final five bouts to claim a 24-10 win Sunday at Rec Hall. The Mountain Hawks mustered victories in just three of the ten bouts while Matt Brown’s second period pin over Marshall Peppelman at 174 propelled the hosts to a win their season opener.

Lehigh falls to 1-1 with the loss. Penn State has now won five straight duals against Lehigh, with Sunday’s match marking the 103rd dual between the longtime eastern rivals.

“We were in a lot of matches,” said Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro. “We knew there would be a lot of tight matches where we had to step up. Wrestling in Rec Hall is a great opportunity for our team. It’s a fun place to wrestle. I think our guys were excited but we let some things slip. At the ends of periods we had opportunities to put matches away or win them but we let those go.”

The dual began at 125 where Lehigh freshman Scott Parker opened the scoring with a second period reversal against Jordan Conaway but Conaway bounced back in the third scoring the decisive takedown in a 4-3 victory.

The most surprising result of the dual came at 133 as second-ranked junior Mason Beckman was upset by No. 10 Jimmy Gulibon 8-3. Beckman scored the initial takedown, but Gulibon stole momentum and control with a takedown and two point near fall at the very end of the first period.

Sophomore Randy Cruz put the Mountain Hawks on the board with an impressive 8-2 win over Kade Moss at 141. Cruz scored the first takedown and slapped on a cradle for a three point near fall to lead 5-0 after one period.

At 149, Penn State’s Zack Beitz claimed an 8-2 decision over freshman Drew Longo with Longo scoring a key third period takedown to avoid giving up the major decision.

Lehigh claimed its second win at 157 as freshman Dylan Milonas won 2-1 over Cody Law. The wrestlers traded escapes, but Milonas build up a 1:33 riding time advantage into the third period to secure his second consecutive one point win. Milonas’ win cut the Mountain Hawks’ deficit to just 9-6 at intermission.

The Nittany Lions extended their lead by winning the first two bouts after the break. At 165 Garett Hammond defeated senior Santiago Martinez 8-3 and then Brown, leading 5-0 in the second period, slapped on a cradle to pin Peppelman at 4:01, extending Penn State’s lead to 18-6.

Junior Nathaniel Brown posted Lehigh’s final victory of the day and its only bonus win, with a 10-2 major decision over Matt McCutcheon. Brown needed, and converted a takedown in the final seconds of regulation to earn the major decision.

At 197 sophomore Elliot Riddick made his dual meet debut at his new weight class and gave fourth-ranked Morgan McIntosh a battle. Riddick scored the only takedown of the match in the second period, but McIntosh scored two escapes and benefitted from two penalty points for stalling to win 4-3.

Penn State also captured the final bout of the dual as Jon Gingrich downed sophomore Doug Vollaro 3-1 at heavyweight.

The Mountain Hawks will travel across Pennsylvania to battle No. 14 Pittsburgh Saturday November 15 at Fitzgerald Field House. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
