Thanks to a national grant, one local community college is offering free truck driving training to veterans and their spouses.
Northampton Community College received a $134,400 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to provide the training.
According to NCC, current and former members of the military who live in Northampton, Monroe, Pike, Wayne, Carbon or Lackawanna counties can go through the commercial truck driver training for free.
That includes members of the National Guard and the Reserves.
The grant will cover full tuition, which is $4200.
The only cost to the students will be the cost of a permit which averages $83.50, and the Hazardous Material Threat Assessment, which runs $60.
Classes during the day and evening run throughout the year at NCC's Monroe County campus at 2411 Rt. 715 in Tannersville.
The next classes begin in December.
According to NCC officials, more than 1,400 people have completed the program, which has a 90 percent job placement rate.
