Many enjoy warm weather while planning for Thanksgiving Eve snow

From the tee to the green, golfers took advantage of record warmth on Monday.

"This is the time to come out and play golf. You need to grab those nice days when you can," said Bob Swope, who hit the links with a group of friends.

"We'll keep on going until there is snow on the ground or until the courses close up," said Dave Hause.

As golfers worked in a round of 18 at Willow Hollow Golf Course in Bern Township, Berks County, road crews were preparing for a weather whiplash. Several inches of snow is expected by mid-week.

Street sweepers picked up leaves in Reading to clear storm drains ahead of the snow, and the salt shed in Bern Township was stocked full with 300 tons of salt and anti-skid material.

"We're getting our trucks ready and outfitted for salt spreaders and getting the plows ready for connection," said Brian Potts, Bern Township manager.

Shoppers also stocked up on bags of salt at Lowe's on Fifth Street Highway in Muhlenberg Township.

"I don't have any left from last year, so I thought I'd get some and be ready for it," said Rick Deerfield.

Who could forget last year with one snowstorm after the next? Now, the region could be in for several inches of snow on one of the busiest travel days of the year.

As you can imagine, Swope and Hause hope the storm slices to the right so they can play through.

"We'll watch it snow and hope it's not too bad for Black Friday. That's our next scheduled game," said Swope.

PennDOT is urging drivers to be flexible and ready to make changes ahead of the busy Thanksgiving travel period.

Crews won't be pre-treating roads because if the storm starts as rain it will wash away the salt.

PennDOT has 714,000 tons of salt on hand. The department is also urging drivers to keep water, food, blankets and a small snow shovel on hand, said officials.
