Local teacher earns A+ for outstanding work

It seems as though a lot of public schools have been plagued by busted budgets, low state test scores and increasing layoffs.

There are bright spots, however, including one Southern Lehigh Middle School special education teacher who just received an A+ award.

For 36 years, Patricia Schultheis has been working to have her students make the grade. Monday, it was adjectives with 12-year-old Jeremiah Albee/Merola.

"Without her, I would be like failing," he said.

But with her, Jeremiah said he's getting As and Bs.

"What makes her different is she feels like she's a part of my family, really," he said.

Schultheis was recently awarded Cedar Crest College's Howard Klopp Exemplary Teacher Award. It's an honor focusing on outstanding teaching in Lehigh and Northampton counties.

"I like seeing the light bulb go off in their heads," she said.

The staff, including math teacher Chris Strobl, wrote letters of recommendation nominating Schultheis.

"Makes everyone work the hardest and do their best. She's going to make sure they do that," Strobl said.

"This year, she started school with a broken back, but she wouldn't dream of missing first couple of days because she was excited to meet the kids. Said there's a little pain but I get the joy to be with my kids, it takes my mind off the pain," Rosemary Grub explained.

It's a point she didn't tell us, but Schultheis did show us her Frozen hallway showcase.

"I love the message of the movie," she said. "You can be anything you want, never quit. What a great message for kids these days."

It's a message those like Jeremiah are learning daily.
