Social media campaign calls for Route 222 overhaul

Over 5,000 users on Facebook are expressing concern over Route 222. Many of them asking for the stretch to become a four lane limited access highway between Reading and Allentown.

Just one of those concerned citizens is Daniel Spiegel of South Whitehall Township.

"This road has become, at best an inconvenience for thousands of people," Spiegel said. "For a number of people, it has been where they died."

Spiegel says he believes a four lane road would cut down on accidents while simultaneously alleviating traffic problems. However, he also does not have a firm estimate of how much the project would cost.

"PennDOT is looking at 222 and the issues of safety and congestion that every traveler who travels that road knows exist," PennDOT Press Officer Sean Brown said.

Brown estimates the project would cost hundreds of millions of dollars and take over 25 years to complete.

"In the meanwhile we still have the existing 222 which is a problem that compounds and just gets worse," Brown said. "We still have to deal with that problem."

Brown also says smaller projects beginning in the spring will help to alleviate some of those problems.

"We have intersection improvement projects," Brown said. "That coupled with a longer term widening of the road, we hope to bring a better and more user friendly 222 to the traveling public."

Spiegel is organizing a phone and email campaign in hopes to make his case to state government officials, PennDOT and planning commissions.
