An elderly woman died after a fire ravaged through a Carbon County home on Saturday night.

Fire officials say they don't yet know what caused the fire, but the intense flames and billowing smoke did kill an elderly woman who lived there.

Officials are not releasing her name at this time. Neighbors tell 69 News the woman was in her 80s.

"We tried to gain entry but by that time the roof had collapsed and the floors were compromised," said Fire Chief Don Weston of the Weatherly Fire Department.

"It is just sad," said neighbor Nancy Probert.

The victim lived in the home on her own, according to neighbors.

This home is a total loss. Burnt up insulation, building materials and personal belongings line the front of the home, but the woman's statue of St. Francis of Assissi continues to stand upright, seemingly untouched.

Neighbors say this statue provides a glimmer of hope and a sense of calm and peace during this this tough time of loss.

"It touches you, it really hits home," said Probert.
