An Allentown mother is facing charges after police say she left her 1-year-old in a freezing car while she got a haircut.

Police said they were flagged down in the 800 block of St. John Street at 2:23 p.m. Tuesday for a child left unattended in a minivan.

Witnesses told the officers that they parked next to the minivan and went inside Zandy's Steak Sandwiches restaurant for lunch around 1:50 p.m., and they noticed a woman approach the van twice, look inside, then walk back down the street toward South 8th Street.

An Allentown Parking Authority employee noticed the baby in the unattended, cold vehicle and called it in at 2:20 p.m.

Police said the temperature at the time was 20 degrees with a wind chill of 9 degrees. The baby was asleep in a car seat with no blankets on her.

The baby's mother -- 23-year-old Mirella Rodriguez of the 400 block of Market Street-- was located around 2:35 p.m. halfway down the block at the corner of 8th and St. John streets in a barber shop with her 3-year-old son getting a haircut.

Rodriguez was charged with endangering the welfare of children.

She posted 10 percent of $5000 bail.
