A reported fire prompted the rescue of people trapped in an elevator inside the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Berks County.
The fire was reported shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday at 1040 Berks Rd., the former Berks Heim Annex, in Bern Township.
Initial reports from the scene were that smoke was coming from the elevator's mechanical room with three people trapped inside an elevator on the third floor.
The building was immediately evacuated, with evacuees being relocated to the nearby agriculture center.
In the meantime, firefighters managed to open the elevator manually and free those trapped inside.
One firefighter was taken to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries; officials had no information about any other injuries.
