While Allentown School District officials have closed an elementary school on Wednesday, fire officials have determined what started a fire there Tuesday.
District officials said they will close Cleveland Elementary School on Wednesday.
A community meeting will be held for Cleveland parents at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the sanctuary at St. Luke’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in the 400 block of North Seventh Street. The meeting will address the district's plan of action for the future of Cleveland students.
A fire was reported around 7:10 a.m. Tuesday at the school, located at 424 N. Ninth Street.
A preliminary finding from the fire department shows the blaze began in the teacher preparation room on the second floor, which received significant damage.
Fire officials say the fire was likely caused by an electrical problem, and was accidental in nature.
"A lot of melted items. Papers in there and a refrigerator, but frankly, I couldn't tell what it was because it was so melted," said Russ Mayo, the district's superintendent.
The hallway and surrounding rooms on the second floor suffered significant smoke damage.
For Yahaira Washington, the mother of two Cleveland students, the fire is the latest incident of safety unrest.
"I honestly don't feel my kids are safe," she said.
Students were evacuated for a gas leak Monday, according to Washington, who said a similar situation happened two weeks ago.
"So when we have something like today happening, and the gas leaks, it really concerns me," Washington said.
The district said Monday's incident is not uncommon, the evacuation is protocol and the school is safe.
Fire crews said the incident that happened two weeks ago involved a leaky valve on the boiler, which has been fixed, and neither incident had anything to do with the fire on Tuesday.
Even so, Washington said her children will be home-schooled, at least until she feels it's safe for them to return.
"When I drop my children off, I'm entrusting Cleveland Elementary and the Allentown School District with the safety and well-being of my children," she said.
