An undercover drug operation led to the discovery of more than $1 million worth of cocaine and the arrest of a woman in Reading.
Berks County detectives were conducting surveillance of a home in the 1400 block of North 12th Street when they observed a man and a woman walk out with a handbag and two pieces of luggage and place them in an SUV, according to an affidavit of probable cause.
The man returned to the home empty-handed while the woman, identified by detectives as Angelica Maria Alvarado, got into the SUV and drove away, authorities said.
Detectives followed the vehicle and called for Reading police to pull the woman over when she failed to use a turn signal in the 1000 block of North Ninth Street, according to court documents.
Alvarado, stopped in the 600 block of Spring Street, granted detectives permission to search the luggage, in which they said they found approximately 24 pounds of cocaine, with a potential street value of more than $1 million, and a large amount of bulk currency, some of it enclosed in heat-sealed bags.
Alvarado, 36, of Reading, was arrested and charged with various drug offenses, including manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver. She was committed to the Berks County Jail on $750,000 bail.
Detectives told 69 News that Alvarado's arrest is part of an ongoing investigation.
