Thrift stores report shortage of winter coats

It's a winter coat crisis in the Lehigh Valley.

Second-hand stores across the region area are desperate for cold-weather clothing donations, to keep those in need warm this winter.

The Goodwill Store on Tilghman Street in Allentown restocks its shelves daily.

"We are constantly trying to restock the accessories for winter," said Ryan Huth, store manager of Goodwill.

Sometimes that stock runs out before store closing.

"Sometimes we are bringing items out, people are grabbing them right off the racks," Huth said.

As of Wednesday morning, the store had just one winter coat.

Most of the items on the coat racks are trench-style, and not meant for frigid temperatures.

The Salvation Army in Whitehall is also struggling with a low inventory.

"We have people all day, asking 'any new coats in the back, anything coming in?'" said Greg Cole, store manager of the Salvation Army.

The store has already sold nearly 4,000 coats in just a month and a half.

That's more than it sold all of last year.

"I don't understand it, we never had this problem," Cole said.

Cole said demand for warm clothing continues to rise, and incoming donations just aren't keeping up.

"We're hoping to find winter clothes every time we open a bag," Cole said.

Both store managers said they're hoping the community will come forward and help meet the need.

"We really could use those donations," Huth said.
