Fans react to Jimmy Rollins trade

Fans were buzzing inside the P.J. Whelihan's in Spring Township, stunned to hear the news that Philadelphia Phillies player Jimmy Rollins is being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"I was kind of crushed. It was a very big shock. I did not think that the Phillies would trade him. But I can see they need to rebuild. But my feeling is that I think it probably was a bad decision," said Rod Simmons, a fan.

Rollins played a season for the Reading Fightin Phils in 1999 followed by 15 seasons for the Philadelphia Phillies.

"Not happy with it. He has been here for what 12, 13 seasons. It had to come down to money," said Tom Unrath, a fan.

"I think it is pretty stupid that they are doing that. He was a really good player for the Phillies," said Cole Galloway, a fan.

Despite some fans being disappointed, many say they hope this ushers in a new winning era for Phillies baseball.

"I think they are in the rebuilding stage and it is time. They are not going anywhere now. It is time to move on up," said Unrath.

"I think they need to rebuild. Obviously they need younger players and need to start fresh. So probably a smart move in the long run," said Kyle McKechnie.

But many say they will always remember what Rollins accomplished during his time in Philadelphia.

"Always going to be grateful for 2008 and all that Jimmy Rollins has meant to the Phillies," said McKechnie.

"It is time for change. But you just hate to see somebody who has been a staunch Phillies player be traded like this. I hope maybe when Jimmy retires that they will bring him back to the Phillies and let him retire as a Philadelphia Phillie," said Simmons.

The Phillies have not confirmed the deal. In exchange the team is expected to get two minor-league pitchers.
