A group of students from the Parkland School District hit the Target in South Whitehall Township Tuesday, for a very special shopping spree with local police through the "Heroes and Helpers" program.

"It is a blast," Lt. Peter Nickischer of the Upper Macungie Township police said. "What a way to get into the Christmas spirit."

The students were provided with a little extra spending money from Target and a local police officer as their guide.

"Two departments got involved," Robert Dick of the South Whitehall Target said. "We actually didn't have enough kids to pair with the police officers."

The children were selected by the Parkland School District, and were escorted by both South Whitehall Township Police and Upper Macungie Township Police.

"This is the season of giving as we all know," Parkland School District Superintendent, Richard Sniscak said. "What a great community example Target is setting, by giving back to needy families in their community."

After shopping, the students were escorted to the South Whitehall Township Police Department to visit Santa and wrap their gifts.

"What an amazing event," Lt. Nickischer said. "We're very lucky to be here."

While this year was the first for the program, it is likely all parties involved will be making efforts to recreate the experience next year.
