Veterans Day celebrated with parade, ceremonies in Berks

Ceremonies in Berks County and across the United States honored veterans on this Veterans Day.

Vice President Joe Biden placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington. Biden thanked the veterans and their families for their service.

A man from Berks County also took part in a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington. Roy Bates, a Penske employee and Vietnam War veteran, said he was honored to take part in the event.

Service members and veterans were also honored Tuesday at City Park in Reading. The Combined Veterans Council of Berks County joined local leaders and community members for a ceremony in Veterans Grove.

Next season, the Fightin Phils will honor living World War Two veterans at each home game.

"When we announced the ceremonial flag service last season, we had no idea how well our fans and the community would receive the nightly program, and because of this, we wanted to allow living veterans of World War II to be celebrated alongside their families during the 2015 season," said Fightins General Manager Scott Hunsicker. "This is the least we could do to give them proper respect and admiration for risking their lives in the line of battle."

Flags were also flying as veterans paraded to Conrad Weiser High School in Heidelberg Township on Tuesday morning.

Police escorted veterans to the Vietnam memorial in front of the school. Veterans then gathered with students for a short program that included a moment of silence.

From there, students planning to enter the military marched with the veterans to the middle school. The middle school students lined the streets and cheered as the parade passed.
