As part of the immigration reform plan, President Obama is expected to announce new policies that would allow more foreign graduates to temporarily work in the United States.
"Too often, we lose talent after the enormous investment we make in students and researchers because we tell them to go home," said President Obama.
President Obama hinted at an event early on Thursday that he will expand a program that currently allows international graduates in science, technology, engineering and math fields to work in the U.S. for up to 29 months.
"A part of staying competitive in a global economy is ensuring we don't have an immigration system that doesn't send away talent, but accepts it," said Obama.
The immigration program expansion details are still unknown at this time, but the brains behind local start-up tech company "Social Station" say the more people from different backgrounds are involved in technology, the better the products are for consumers.
"People from all different walks of life can contribute to this field, especially if you look more out to California it is predominately white males," said Social Station CEO and founder Alex Kalogeropoulos.
" I have done a lot of hiring for software developers and there is just a lack of talent in the area," said Social Station CTO Ron Heft.
There is plenty of opposition to the tech immigration expansion plan President Obama is expected to announce.
Many say allowing immigrant workers to stay in the country for longer, will take away jobs from Americans in the industry looking for work.
