It's been a controversial issue in the Bethlehem area for years. A local landfill is looking to expand in Lower Saucon Township.
IESI Bethlehem Landfill Corporation has sent a contract to all locals living near the disposal site. In general terms, it explains the company is willing to pay the difference between the amount a home sells for and its assessed value, for anyone who signs on the dotted line.
"This agreement is intended or designed to basically protect the value of those homeowner's property," said Allentown lawyer John Lushis.
Lushis is not associated with IESI or neighbors living nearby.
"If the owner's property is worth $300,000 today and it dips down to $250,000 today, the landfill is willing to make up that difference," he explained.
It all stems from the fact that IESI wants to expand the landfill. The company knows many locals are opposed to an expansion. Public outcry can make it difficult, time consuming, and costly for the company to receive the permits it needs for the project.
" The homeowners are saying we understand you are giving us monetary protection and in exchange we are not going to raise cain about landfill expansion," said Lushis.
However, some residents say the document is complete garbage.
" It's a smoke-screen," said local resident Priscilla deLeone. "They have different motives. They want to buy up properties and this is a way for them to do it."
IESI is hosting an open meeting for local residents to voice their concerns. It will be held on November 13 at 6:40pm at the Best Western in Bethlehem
