Local Republican lawmakers respond to President's speech

There are many who are adamantly opposed to the President’s plan, among them some of our local congressmen.

Republican Congressman Charlie Dent says the president's tactics are alienating to Congress.

"Congress stands ready to work with the president to reach a reasonable accommodation or compromise on this issue within the framework of our system of government but we will not be dictated to," he said.

Several other Republican members of Congress also released statements in response to the president's executive order.

Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick says, "The President should not be going it alone - he should bring Americans together to solve this problem instead of dividing Americans even further."

And Senator Pat Toomey echoed those sentiments, saying, "President Obama’s unilateral and legally unauthorized actions will do nothing to fix our broken system, and could encourage even more illegal immigration.”

Thursday night, President Barack Obama told the American people that the time to change the nation's immigration system is now, and he's taking action to make that happen.

In a nationally televised address from the White House, Obama says it doesn't make sense to round up and deport millions of people living in the country illegally. He says his plan will let them come out of the shadows, but it's not anything close to amnesty.

Obama's plan will shield from deportation nearly 5 million immigrants now in the U.S. illegally.

Obama says that although there was a brief spike in unaccompanied children coming across the border over the summer, overall the number of people trying to cross the border illegally is at its lowest level since the 1970s.
