You don't need to look at a calendar to know the Christmas season will soon be upon us and as we head into the holidays, we thought we'd share the efforts of one local man who promotes the happiness of Christmas every month of the year.
That’s the philosophy behind Santa America.
For one local hospice volunteer, Mike Berg of Lyons, Berks County, the magic of Christmas can be found anytime, anywhere.
"Today is a present, it's a gift. We don't know tomorrow. We can't change the past so live each day as if it was your last, " says Mike.
He and his wife, Joan, love children and Christmas.
And Mike looks an awful lot like Santa Claus. In fact, he and Joan joke that they are Mr. and Mrs. Claus.
"I've even started to take candy canes with me for little children who think, 'hmm I"m not sure if he's the one but I'm not going to take a chance'," says Mike.
Mike put two and two together and joined Santa America, a nationwide organization that provides special unhurried visits for families in crisis.
Mike says he's learned that in the worst of times, a little Christmas goes a long way.
"If I was to have a time when I'm needed, there may be a time afterward where I might shed a tear but realizing I've made a difference in someone's life."
Santa America also provides disaster relief, autism support and support for military families.
Its mission is simple: to bring hope, love and joy to anyone who needs it.
