A record low temperature that stood in Berks County for more than a century was shattered early Tuesday morning when the thermometer plummeted to -3 degrees.
The official temperature was recorded at Reading Regional Airport in Bern Township, breaking the previous record of three degrees above zero, which was set on Feb. 24, 1914.
The subfreezing cold prompted the Muhlenberg and Reading school districts and a handful of parochial schools in Berks County to delay the start of classes two hours.
This is the second time in recent days that a more than 100-year-old record low temperature was broken in Berks County.
The Feb. 16 low of -1 broke the previous record of zero, which was recorded on that date in 1904.
The lowest temperature recorded in Berks in the 146 years that official records have been kept is -21, which was set in January 1994.
