A new book for career women claims to be a road map to job success by highlighting pitfalls many women make every day.
Saying you’re sorry and many other behaviors could be sabotaging your success.
Melissa Sommer is moving up in life and her career.
“I am in a very new position and things have worked out very well in terms of me having the awareness of what I want to do,” says Sommer.
Her success is due to her own smarts, tenacity and with some help from career coach Aimee Cohen.
“I’ve been fortunate just to have a lot of great leadership around me, on top of the coaching and realize that once you get the job, that’s not the end,” says Sommer.
Normally, Cohen gives advice through client meetings where she charges $250 per hour.
Cohen says, “There were so many common themes and threads that ran throughout all of my clients.”
Now, you can get her straight-up advice right off the store shelf.
“As women, often times we are committing these self-sabotaging behaviors unintentionally, unconsciously that are holding us back,” says Cohen.
Cohen’s top tips include:
Stop apologizing for everything. Men don’t, so why should you?
Start a brag book of your accomplishments, have it handy in case you need to quickly remember what you’ve done right.
Be your own BFF with self-support, motivation and praise; don’t wait around for someone to say something.
Know what you’re doing is good.
And overcome the triple D, stop downplaying, dismissing and diminishing your own accomplishments.
Cohen says, “It really is about pulling up those big girl panties and taking more control over your career.”
Another tip is to act, dress and manage two positions up.
If your co-workers are comfortable in jeans, but your bosses wear suits, wear a suit.
Let them know your ambitions from the start.
Cohen's practical advice on overcoming the seven deadly sins that sabotage career success is accessible in her book: "Woman Up!"
It's available on amazon.com.
