Discontent with the Reading School District's alternative education program resurfaced Wednesday night for the third month in a row, at a meeting of the school board.

During the public comment portion of the meeting former board member, Karen McCree, addressed the board for six whole minutes instead of the allotted three, after the parent of a student in the district ceded her time to McCree.

McCree complained to the board about the lack of a curriculum at The Learning Academy at City Line, the district's center for alternative education.

She also said some students were being charged with truancy, when in fact officials are rather unaware of students who receive instruction at home or have other home bound arrangements.

Also expressing concerns regarding crowded classrooms, McCree suggested that the parents of these students would be filing complaints with the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission which enforces anti-discrimination laws, as well as the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

The Learning Academy at Main Line is run by the Berks County Intermediate Unit, contracted by the district.

Board member Pierre Cooper responded saying while "this district was slow to react, we got to get a hold of this."

District Superintendent, Dr. Khalid Mumin, added that the district is actively working with both the Department of Education and the Human Relations Commission.

In other business, the board voted to approve various payment reports, operations items, personnel changes and curriculum.

The board will meet next on December 1st for a special reorganization meeting.
