The Allentown School District has eliminated the graduation project requirement starting with the class of 2017 following a unanimous vote by directors Thursday night.
The requirement was considered no longer necessary by administrators, considering that Project Based Learning is embedded throughout the Pennsylvania Common Core Standards, providing ASD students many opportunities to acquire that knowledge.
In addition, Project Based Learning requirements are included in all middle school science, math and social studies classrooms.
Class of 2017 students and those beyond are, or will be, required to pass Keystone Exams in Algebra I, literature, and biology.
Each Keystone Exam has two modules and a student who does not earn a proficient mark on the Keystone Exam after two attempts will be required to complete a Project-Based Assessment for those modules in each subject area, according to administrators Thursday night.
The graduation project requirement will still be in effect for students in the class of 2015 and 2016.
In other business Thursday night, directors awarded a bid to KC Mechanical Services of Mount Bethel, Northampton County, to provide new domestic water service for Harrison Morton Middle School in the amount of $89,000. The money to pay for the work will be taken out of of the district's facilities budget.
Directors also approved the 2015-2016 Act I budget timeline. Some notable dates include December 22 when ASD makes the 2015-2016 proposed preliminary budget available for public inspection and one month later, on January 22nd, when the board will vote to adopt that proposed preliminary budget. The school board is scheduled to adopt the 2015-2016 proposed final budget on May 30, 2015, with final adoption of the Fiscal Year 2015-2016 budget scheduled for June 25.
