A pair of Pennsylvania State Police troopers were in the right place at the right time overnight.
Troopers Keith Rudy and Alan Zulick were patrolling in the Myerstown area of eastern Lebanon County shortly before 3 a.m. Friday when they were alerted to a building fire with possible entrapment.
Rudy and Zulick, stationed at Reading-based Troop L's Jonestown barracks, rushed to the scene at 19 N. Railroad St in Myerstown, arriving before fire and EMS crews could get there, officials said.
The troopers cleared four units in the basement and first floor of the smoke-filled, nine-unit apartment house, removing five occupants, including an elderly woman who needed assistance, police said.
Two of the residents were taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
Trooper Rudy also assisted EMS in treating one of two cats that had also been rescued from the building.
The American Red Cross told 69 News that it is assisting 19 people who have been displaced from the apartment house. Three of the seven families are being provided with food, clothing and shelter; the other four families are being provided with shelter until water service can be restored to the building.
Investigators have not determined how the fire started.
