It was just another day for Evelyn Lengel. Lengel was donating blood at the Miller-Keystone Blood Center in Bern Township, Berks County. It is something she had been doing every two months for the past 20 years.
"I enjoy helping people and at one time I needed a transfusion," said Evelyn Lengel, a blood donor.
The people behind the scenes helping her donate were part of the Miller-Keystone Blood Center collection staff and volunteers.
Miller-Keystone Blood Center is the sole provider of blood for 27 area hospitals in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
"We could not do that without our volunteers, whether they be the volunteer blood donors who are coming in to donate or the volunteers we have that assist our collection staff," said Andrea Gebely, the assistant director of volunteer services.
Peggy Schwab is one of those critical volunteers. Schwab works in the canteen area, keeping a close eye on donors after they have given blood.
Other volunteers are also needed to work as a donor aide to make donors feel comfortable prior to giving blood and assist the collection staff.
"You meet a lot of people, different people. It is a lot of fun. I enjoy it," said Peggy Schwab, a volunteer.
Volunteers are needed from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. six days a week in the donor centers or you can volunteer to help in the blood mobiles any day of the week.
Schwab says whether you are giving blood or helping aide the donation, it is a great gift to give.
"A lot of people don't have the means of donating for charities, but this is something that is free and anybody can do it," said Schwab.
